Day 1: Darwin - Kakadu National Park

Depart Darwin and travel along the Arnhem Highway, their major river systems and wetlands, into Kakadu National Park. Located 257 kilometres east of Darwin, the national park covers 20,000 square kilometres of landscape varying from rocky escarpment that is home to historic Aboriginal rock art dating back thousands of years, to the floodplains that are abundant with wildlife. Stop at Nourlangie, where your Driver Guide will lead you on a walk to view the rock art galleries. After lunch, join your local guide on a cruise of Yellow Water Billabong. Search for saltwater crocodiles and the colourful range of birdlife for which this region is renowned. Visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre to view the informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu.

a 30 minute scenic flight over Arnhem Land Escarpment

A scenic flight is the ideal way to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of Kakadu and the Arnhem Land Escarpment. You’ll discover winding rivers, spectacular 1.8 billion years of continuous erosion, billabongs, flood plains and view the Archway, East Alligator River Valley, Mikinj Valley Billabongs and Magela Floodplains.

Day 2: Kakadu – Darwin

This morning join your Driver Guide to explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr, where you’ll climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, believed to be 20,000 years old, to the lookout for the view over the surrounding wetlands. Join the Guluyambi Cruise along the East Alligator River. An Aboriginal guide will provide an insight into their culture, including local mythology, the river’s abundant food chain, as well as bush survival skills. With special permission of the local people, you are able to go ashore in Arnhem Land. Visit the Bowali Visitor Centre before returning to Darwin.

Day 3: Darwin - Katherine - Farewell Darwin

Travel south from Darwin and stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery. Continue to Edith Falls, where there is time for a refreshing swim (conditions permitting). After lunch enjoy a 2 hour scenic cruise through Katherine Gorge. One of the most visited sites in Australia’s Top End, it is a stunning network of thirteen gorges carved from billion year old sandstone that are home to many rapids and falls, flowing from the Katherine River. The cruise will put you at the heart of Katherine Gorge among freshwater crocodiles, wonderful birdlife and some of the most amazing scenery the Northern Territory has to offer. There is a short walk to reach the second gorge. Enjoy a brief tour of Katherine, before returning to Darwin.

Please Note: This itinerary is valid for travel from 1 April 2016. Due to seasonal conditions this itinerary may change without notice. In April & November-March, if weather conditions preclude access to the East Alligator region, alternative touring will be arranged on Day 2.

Fitness requirement

Low level of fitness required.

  • Kakadu: Small amount of walking including a 10-15 minute walk on uneven ground with a gradual climb to the viewing point.
    There is wheelchair access, however, this is on uneven ground and is accessible for only a small part of the walk and must have a carer to assist.
  • Katherine: Small amount of walking.
